“God, Give Me Some Direction”

Have you ever wanted God to just put a sticky note on your forehead that tells you what to do? I hear people saying that more and more.
“Give me some direction!” is something that many of us crave. (This may or may not be a regular part of my prayer life.)
But here’s the thing: God does give direction. If you’re anything like me, we often just don’t pay attention. Here’s an example:
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. Philippians 4:8
I mean, that’s pretty direct. Think about such things.
I’ve read this verse many, many times. However, it wasn’t until recently that I started to consider what such things are. I encourage you to get out a piece of paper and write out such things. Here are some prompts to get you started:
- What are some truthful things I can think about?
- What are some noble things I can think about?
- What are some things that are right that I can think about?
- What are some things that are pure that I can think about?
- What are some lovely things I can think about?
- What are some things that are admirable that I can think about?
- What are some excellent things I can think about?
- What are some things that are praiseworthy I can think about?
What would thinking about such things do for you? How would your perception change if you were to think about such things? How would you be encouraged if you were to think about such things? How would you impact others if you were to think about such things?
Funny thing, this verse was written right after Paul talks about not being anxious about anything. Coincidence? I don’t think so. (By the way, he gives us some clear direction in verses 4-6 as well. Throw in a promise about peace in between, and you’ve got some good wisdom right there in Paul’s letter to the Philippians.)
Sounds like a great way to start summer.
